Setting up key file authentication with linux

Hi there,

I'm setting up veyon in my classroom, using youtube videos to guide me through the configurator. All the videos out there are for windows, which doesn't help me apparently. I'm using linux for the first time and something is up with my authentication keys. Everything is set up and my student computers have the public key, but when i start Veyon Master, all I get is a popup that says: "No authentication key files were found or your current ones are outdated...". From googling around, it seems it's something to do with the access group being "root". People are suggesting "change the access group" or something like that, but I'm a teacher who is new to linux and veyon. PLEASE, if anyone can just give me a step by step, what I need to click, what I need to do to get this working properly? I'm fully up to date at version 4.5.7. Thank you!

You're on the right track already. You should open Veyon Configurator again, go to the Authentication keys page, select the private key and click the Set access group button. Now select a user group which teachers are member of, e.g. a dedicated "teachers" user group. Afterwards teachers should be able to read the file /etc/veyon/keys/private/teacher/key and start Veyon Master properly.

You should check the permissions of the key with:

$ ls -al /etc/veyon/keys/private/teacher/key
